Large-Scale CNC Manufacturing from Aschaffenburg – Precision in Every Dimension

In the coming days, an extra-wide special transport vehicle will set out from Fürther Straße to the Max Planck Institute (MPI) in Garching near Munich.

Currently being loaded is a two-ton assembly—measuring approximately four by four meters in area—which Blank, a large-scale turning specialist based in Aschaffenburg, manufactured for the "Micado" camera of the world's largest optical telescope. Three years ago, Managing Director Peter Blank and his team received a demanding commission from the MPI for this very telescope. Scheduled to go into operation in the Chilean desert in 2029, the instrument is designed to observe black holes and uncharted galaxies. Now, following a Europe-wide tender, the Blank company has manufactured another high-precision stainless steel bearing ring for a camera; within just three months, they integrated it into a single unit alongside a complex welded assembly and a large-format bearing supplied by ThyssenKrupp. According to Production Manager Daniel Blank, approximately ten of the company's employees were involved in this custom fabrication project, performing tasks ranging from welding, milling, and turning to painting and final assembly. Uncle and nephew Blank take great pride in their contribution to this international project—an endeavor that also involves numerous other companies from the Rhine-Main region.
